How Michael Jackson Came to Lalon's Land Without YouTube

Back in the day, there was no YouTube. The world-famous pop star Michael Jackson was popular in Bangladesh as well. The song “Aoul Baoul Lalon-er Deshe Michael Jackson Ailo Re, Are Sabar Matha Khailo Re” from the film “Dhaka 86” is a reminder of that time. Meanwhile, Jackson caused a global frenzy, becoming a beloved icon across various demographics. Today (August 29) marks the 66th birthday of this music legend.

Although Michael Jackson did not physically visit Bangladesh, his music reached the people there. At that time, televisions were not yet commonplace in every home, and the internet was unthinkable. During that period, the arrival of a foreign artist with a different style and culture was a remarkable event for the people of Bangladesh. The people of that era were not as open to foreign music and films as they are today. Such “foreign culture” was generally kept at a distance. Yet, during this time, Michael Jackson was embraced by music-loving youth in Bangladesh. Ayub Bachchu, a prominent Bangladeshi rock star, once remarked in an interview that if you asked a rickshaw driver in Dhaka to name a foreign artist, he would confidently say Michael Jackson.

Even years after his passing, Michael Jackson is more than just a name; he is a remarkable chapter in the history of world music. He added a new dimension to dance, with moves like the “moonwalk” and “anti-gravity lean” becoming iconic dance gestures. Jackson was not only celebrated as a musician but also as a dancer. He distinguished himself from all other musicians worldwide through his unique blend of music and dance. He was not just a superstar of his time; no artist has yet surpassed his musical milestones.

Michael Jackson is known as the “King of Pop.” He was born on this day in 1958. His impact was profound across music, dance, and fashion. For over four decades, he influenced these fields. His fashion style was immensely popular among youth worldwide. Jackson began his solo music career at the age of 13. His first solo album, “Ben,” was released in 1972, followed by the album “Off the Wall” in 1979. The hits “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You” from this album brought him immense popularity. Among Jackson's most successful albums are “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” “Bad,” “Dangerous,” and “HIStory,” with “Thriller” being the highest-selling album of all time.

A film based on Michael Jackson's life is currently in production, directed by Graham King, the producer of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This information was recently reported by a U.S. news outlet. Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, and there are still uncertainties surrounding his death. It is widely believed that his death was due to long-term use of painkillers. The news of his death caused a crash on Google, Twitter, and AOL sites, leading to a temporary shutdown of social media platforms.
