Ukraine Launches Largest Drone Attack, Claims Russia

Ukraine has carried out a large-scale drone attack in Russia. Moscow’s mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, has claimed that on Wednesday (August 21), Russian air defense forces destroyed at least 11 Ukrainian drones during the attack. Additionally, other regions of the country also experienced drone strikes. This news was reported by the British news agency Reuters.

On social media platform Telegram, the mayor stated at 4:43 AM local time, “The air defense system is intercepting enemy drones. This is one of the largest drone attacks in Moscow. We are monitoring the situation.” He also mentioned that some drones were shot down in the town of Podolsk, located 38 kilometers south of the Kremlin. Kyiv has previously conducted drone attacks targeting Moscow, but no significant damage had occurred. Wednesday's attack was the most extensive since May 2023. Earlier, Russia had claimed to have destroyed 8 drones in previous attacks.

Initially, the mayor reported no casualties or significant damage from the attack.

Meanwhile, Russian officials have said that 23 drones and other drones and missiles were destroyed in the southwestern Bryansk region.

The governor of Bryansk stated on Telegram that no casualties or damage had been reported from the attack.

The state news agency RIA reported that two drones were shot down in the Tula region, located north of Moscow.

Governor Vasily Golubev of the southwestern Rostov region said that their air defense system destroyed a Ukrainian missile, and no damage occurred during the attack.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not include information about Tula and Rostov in their statement.

Additionally, the Ministry reported that 6 drones were shot down in the Belgorod region, 3 in Kaluga, and 2 in Kursk.

The accuracy of each claim could not be independently verified.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has not commented on the attack.

In recent months, Ukraine has intensified aerial attacks on Russia with the aim of reducing the country’s military capabilities by destroying critical infrastructure.
