Joi: Sheikh Hasina Has No Plans to Go Anywhere Else from India

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of Bangladesh's recently former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has stated that there are no plans for her to move anywhere else from India. He made these comments in an exclusive interview with Deutsche Welle.

Sheikh Hasina resigned under immense public pressure in Bangladesh and sought refuge in India. Joy mentioned that although the decision to resign was made a day prior, it had not been announced at that time. He said, "She made the decision a day before. Only a few of us knew she would announce her resignation and her plan was to ensure a transition of power according to the constitution. However, when they started marching towards the Ganabhaban, we were scared and said there was no time left; you need to leave immediately."

The quota movement in Bangladesh eventually turned into a mass movement, resulting in several hundred deaths. There have been accusations from various quarters that Sheikh Hasina's government used excessive force to suppress the protesters. Faced with intense protests, Sheikh Hasina quickly left the country with her sister, Sheikh Rehana.

Regarding the leadership of the Awami League, Joy responded, "Currently, there are no plans for her to enter politics. He said, ‘There have been three coups against our family. Each time, we lost everything and had to live abroad. Except for my mother and me, we have all been living abroad for a long time. We are settled here. We have no problems with our life here. We are accustomed to living here.’

He noted that Sheikh Hasina has not made any decision to move elsewhere from India, adding, “Sheikh Hasina is doing well, currently in Delhi. My sister is with her. My sister lives in Delhi. She is fine, but she is very sad.”

Joy further said, “She is deeply saddened that the country for which her father sacrificed his life, and for which her entire family has sacrificed, is treating her this way—expelling her and attacking her. We never imagined this could happen.”
