Jahangir Kabir, the General Secretary of the Barisal District Awami League and Chairman of the District Council, has been arrested by a police team from Dhaka. He was apprehended from his residence in the Amtala area of Barisal Municipality on Wednesday (August 14) at around 6 AM.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barisal Sadar Police Station, KM Mizanur Rahman, confirmed the arrest. According to police sources, a recent phone conversation between former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and district Awami League General Secretary Jahangir Kabir went viral on social media. He was arrested on charges of conspiring to create disorder in Barisal. On Monday (August 12), this leader had a phone conversation with former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. In the three-minute conversation that went viral on Facebook, Sheikh Hasina advised Jahangir Kabir to maintain discipline within party activities and properly observe the National Mourning Day on August 15. Jahangir Kabir responded by reassuring her not to worry and stating that they are strong.
In response, Sheikh Hasina said, “Why should I be worried? I am not afraid. You see how they have been hanging our police force. They have beaten our workers, even those wearing burqas. This country was won with blood. You remain as you are.”
Regarding the arrest, OC KM Mizanur Rahman said, “He was arrested for having a phone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and for conspiring to create disorder. A police team from Dhaka came and took him into custody to be brought to Dhaka.”
