In a major escape from the Kashimpur High-Security Jail in Gazipur, 209 prisoners managed to flee after taking prison guards hostage during a protest. On Tuesday afternoon, guards fired shots to prevent the escape, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. Sources from the prison confirm that among the deceased are three militants.
Witnesses reported that on Tuesday afternoon, some prisoners took several guards hostage and began protesting for their release. The guards' attempts to calm them down were unsuccessful. Around 1:30 PM, military personnel arrived at the prison to bring the situation under control. Relatives of the prisoners gathered at the gate upon hearing of the protest. At one point, the protesters set fire to a warehouse outside the prison. The military then dispersed the crowd.
Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala told Prothom Alo that the protest and riot began around noon with both militants and general prisoners demanding their release. Many prisoners used ladders and broke down walls to escape. Despite the guards' efforts to control the situation, they were unsuccessful. Helicopter teams from the military were sent from Dhaka upon receiving the news. The guards then fired shots for security reasons, resulting in six deaths. In addition, 209 prisoners escaped.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered at night and sent to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
The deceased include Imtiaz Pavel (24), son of Makbul Mia from Rameshwarpur, Moulvibazar, accused in a murder case; Swapna Sheikh (40), son of Rajjak Sheikh from Taratia, Tangail, accused in a robbery case; Ayatullah (39), son of Sirajul Islam from Jalosha, Sunamganj; Md.
