The United Nations will soon initiate an investigation into the killings of protesters during the recent student movement in Bangladesh. This information was conveyed by the press wing of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, citing Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The press release stated, "An investigation led by the United Nations into the killings of protesters during the student movement will begin very soon. A team of UN experts will visit Bangladesh soon to start the investigation."
This statement was made during a telephone conversation today, Wednesday, between Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Dr. Yunus thanked Volker Turk for his support of the student movement in Bangladesh and expressed gratitude to his long-time friend, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, for their backing.
During the call, Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus also stated that the core foundation of his administration will be the protection of human rights. Ensuring the safety of every citizen will be the highest priority of his government. He requested the UN's assistance in the country's reconstruction and in upholding human rights.
