Due to the full moon tide, heavy rainfall, and flooding in the eastern part of the country, there has been an abnormal increase in water levels in the rivers and streams of Bagerhat. During high tide, water levels in the major rivers of the district have risen by two to four feet above normal. This has led to flooding of low-lying areas along riverbanks and extensive regions of the Sundarbans outside the embankments. However, there have been no reports of damage to wildlife so far.
According to Haolader Azad Kabir, the acting officer at the Karamjal Tourist and Wildlife Breeding Center in the Chandpai Range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, water levels in almost all rivers inside the Sundarbans have increased compared to normal. During today's high tide, various areas of the forest have been submerged under two to four feet of water. For the past two days, the roads at the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center have been covered by nearly one foot of water during high tide. However, there have been no reports of damage to wildlife inside the forest. According to the official, the Sundarbans’ mangrove forest is inundated during high tides every day. Although the extra-high tides have slightly increased the water levels inside the forest, the water recedes during low tide, and no harm has been reported to the wildlife. Additionally, wildlife can take refuge on higher hills within the forest.
Meanwhile, during high tide, low-lying areas of Bagerhat Sadar, Morelganj, Mongla, and Rampal upazilas have been inundated for three days. During today's high tide, 15 villages in various areas of Morelganj municipality were flooded. Water levels have risen up to one to one and a half feet in different areas and roads, causing inconvenience to the residents. However, as the water recedes during low tide, local people are staying in their homes. Moinabegum from Shrenikhali village in Morelganj upazila said, “The tide has flooded our house. We cannot cook lunch because the water has risen on the stove.”
Local residents reported that the pressure of the water has damaged roads in several riverbank unions over the past three days. However, the water pressure has somewhat decreased today compared to Friday.
When contacted, Kumar Swastik, sub-divisional engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB) Bagerhat office, said that the water levels in all rivers and streams of Bagerhat, including the Pashur River in the Sundarbans, have increased compared to normal due to the full moon, heavy rains, and rough sea. However, the water pressure has slightly decreased today compared to the past two days.
