West Bengal Turns into Battlefield with Demands for Mamata’s Resignation

Protests have erupted across West Bengal demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The situation has escalated as protesters attempted to enter the Kolkata Secretariat, intensifying the situation. On Tuesday (August 27), there were severe clashes between protesters and police in areas including Mahatma Gandhi Road, Kolkata Police Training School, Shatnagar, and Howrah Bridge. One law enforcement officer sustained a head injury from a brick thrown by the protesters.

The protests have led to the closure of the Kona Expressway. Due to disruptions in road traffic, many people are trying to reach their destinations using the metro.

The protests began in response to the rape and murder of a female doctor at the renowned RG Kar Hospital in West Bengal and have since evolved into demands for Mamata’s resignation. Students have taken to the streets with placards reading "One Demand, One Agenda: Mamata’s Resignation." When protesters attempted to enter the West Bengal Secretariat, Nabanna, a major confrontation ensued. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd, while protesters retaliated by throwing bricks.

According to Anandabazar, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has entered the Secretariat and is currently staying there amid the ongoing protests.

Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has stated that if the police resort to violence against the protesters, he will strongly resist. He has expressed support for the students’ sit-in at the Secretariat and warned that if police use force against them, he will block roads. Adhikari also mentioned that reports of brutality are already emerging from various places. He threatened that if the situation persists, West Bengal will be brought to a standstill on Wednesday.
