West Bengal is witnessing daily protests and meetings following the arrest of a suspect. A post on social media led to a widespread night vigil by women demanding justice for the victim, which drew thousands of people. In response, the student community in West Bengal has now called for a 'Nabanna Chalo' movement, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
While initially specific locations in Kolkata were mentioned, protests soon spread to hundreds of places across the state. Supporters of East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mohammedan clubs came together to protest in an unprecedented show of unity. Many were beaten and arrested by the police. West Bengal has not seen such a large-scale movement against the ruling party since India's independence.
The movement is gaining momentum with a renewed call on social media. On August 27, students have planned a 'Nabanna Chalo' campaign to the Chief Minister's office in the state secretariat. The campaign’s sole demand is, "We want justice. The sole demand is the resignation of the Chief Minister."
Shuvendu Adhikari, leader of the state's main opposition party, the BJP, has publicly supported this demand and announced his participation in the Nabanna march. This has further intensified the situation.
Recently, Shuvendu Adhikari had suggested to the victim's father that he should call for the march to Nabanna with the national flag. He stated, "We have a duty, as does every political party. That’s why we cannot make this call ourselves. However, if he makes the call, we will take action."
Now, with this demand gaining traction on social media, the ruling party, the Trinamool Congress, finds itself under pressure. A post by Devdeep Adhikari from the student community has called for Mamata Banerjee's resignation, stating, "We want justice. The sole demand is Mamata’s resignation. If she does not resign by August 26, we will proceed with the Nabanna Chalo campaign on August 27. We urge every household to send at least one person to participate. No violence; let the police stand by. This is the call of the West Bengal student community."
Devdeep clarified that he is a student and did not personally initiate the campaign but merely shared the message he received.
This post is now widely circulated on social media, with public opinion supporting the campaign. Shuvendu Adhikari has openly supported the student community’s demand and confirmed his participation in the march.
Shuvendu stated, “During my time in TMC, BJP members were not allowed to attend any events. There is nothing significant in BJP now. If the student community conducts the Nabanna march, I will participate. I urge Mamata Banerjee to resign by the 26th to avoid police firing.”
Former Indian Minister Devashree Choudhury also confirmed BJP's participation in the campaign, stating, “Mamata Banerjee has exceeded her limits. She is no longer fit to be Chief Minister for even a moment longer. The people of the state are demanding her resignation. To preserve her honor, she should resign immediately.”
She further remarked, “Mamata always claimed that her birth was through the struggle! Now, the same struggle is rejecting her. People from all walks of life are taking to the streets daily against her and her government. Let us unite today for the Nabanna campaign, not under any political flag, but to bring peace to the victim’s soul through the Chief Minister’s resignation. This is what the people of the state want.”
