As the U.S. presidential election approaches, there is a dispute between the two main contenders, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, regarding the use of microphones in the upcoming debate next month. The Trump and Kamala camps are arguing over whether one candidate's microphone should be turned off while the other is speaking during the debate.
Kamala Harris's campaign has stated in a statement to CBS News that they want both candidates' microphones to remain on throughout the entire debate. However, Donald Trump's campaign prefers the debate on September 10 to follow the same rules that were in place during President Joe Biden's candidacy. At that time, it was decided that microphones would be turned off for the non-speaking candidate.
Previously, Trump and Biden had their first debate in June on CNN. The next debate is scheduled for September 10 on ABC News. With Biden stepping down from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris has been selected as the candidate, so the next debate will be between Trump and Harris. The rules for the debate, which were set by the Biden campaign, included turning off the microphone of the non-speaking candidate during the debate. The Trump campaign had agreed to these rules. However, now, two weeks before the first debate between Trump and Harris, the Democratic camp wants the microphones to remain on throughout the debate.
The Democratic camp argues that keeping the microphones on allows for both candidates to interact and present their counter-arguments directly during the debate. On the other hand, the Republican camp contends that having the microphone turned off during Biden’s debates was beneficial. The Harris camp is seeking new ways to approach the debate under the existing rules.
