White House Denies US Involvement in Sheikh Hasina’s Removal

The United States has denied any involvement in the removal of Sheikh Hasina from power. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated during a press briefing in Washington yesterday, Monday, that such claims are utterly false.

During the briefing, Jean-Pierre was asked about allegations made by former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who claimed that the US played a role in forcing her out of office. She alleged that her removal was due to her refusal to hand over an island to Washington, suggesting that she might have remained in power had she agreed. In response, Jean-Pierre said, “We are not involved in any of this. Any reports or rumors about US involvement are completely false and entirely untrue.”

Jean-Pierre further stated, “The people of Bangladesh have chosen their own path. We believe that the future of the government in Bangladesh will be determined by its people. That is our position. So if any such allegations are made, I will always state that what I have said is absolutely true.”

On Sunday, several Indian news outlets, including The Print, reported that Sheikh Hasina had said she was removed from power because she refused to hand over the Saint Martin Island, and that the US was behind this. However, Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, tweeted at 11:55 PM on Sunday from his verified account, stating, “A statement regarding my mother’s resignation has been published in the media, which is completely false and fabricated. I just spoke with her (Sheikh Hasina) and confirmed that she has not made any statements either before or after leaving Dhaka.”
