Landslide Destroys Teesta Hydropower Plant in Sikkim

In India's Sikkim, the Teesta Stage 5 hydropower plant of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has been completely destroyed due to a landslide. The landslide occurred on the morning of Tuesday, August 20, as reported by Indian news outlet NDTV.

The 510-megawatt power plant had been under threat due to regular minor landslides over the past few weeks. On Tuesday morning, a large portion of the mountain collapsed, turning the power station into rubble. There have been no reports of casualties. The power plant had been evacuated a few days earlier due to the regular landslides.

Videos captured by workers near the power plant show a section of the mountain slowly shifting, and within moments, a massive part of it crashes onto the power station. The video also captures the terrified shouts of people.

It is worth noting that the Stage 5 dam had been non-operational since October 2023 following the breach of the Lhonak Glacier Lake in Sikkim. During that time, sudden flooding destroyed parts of the Teesta dam of Sikkim's largest hydropower project, Chungthang.

In the video, a significant portion of the dam collapses as the Teesta River’s increasing flow sweeps through Mangan district in northern Sikkim.
