The flood situation is improving, but heavy rain is expected in three regions



The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has reported that the severe flooding in the country's northeastern region, caused by upstream floods and heavy rainfall, is improving as the water levels decrease. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain for the Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions.

According to the regular bulletin from the Flood Forecast Centre on Saturday, the water levels in the major rivers of the country's northeastern, eastern, and southeastern regions are continuing to decline.

Based on information from weather agencies, it was noted that there has been no significant rainfall in the past 24 hours in the eastern districts of Comilla, Brahmanbaria, and Feni, as well as in Tripura, India. The trend of decreasing water levels in upstream rivers is ongoing.

In the next 24 hours, there is no likelihood of heavy rain in the northeastern region and its upstream areas. The flood situation in the low-lying areas along the Manu, Khowai, and Dhala rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts of the northeastern region is expected to continue improving. Similarly, there is no chance of heavy rain in the southeastern, eastern, and adjacent upstream areas. The flood situation in the low-lying areas along the Muhuri, Feni, Gomti, and Halda rivers in Feni, Comilla, and Chattogram districts is likely to improve further. The bulletin mentioned that water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are decreasing, while the Ganges-Padma rivers remain stable. This situation is expected to persist for the next 48 hours.

In the northeastern region, the water levels in the Surma-Kushiara rivers are decreasing and this trend may continue for the next 24 hours. Additionally, the water flow in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region is normal and is expected to remain so for the next 48 hours.

As of 9 AM on Saturday, the water levels in six rivers were above the danger level at nine points.

At that time, among the 116 stations of the Flood Forecast Centre, there was a rising trend in water levels at 22 points, while levels were decreasing at 84 points and remained unchanged at 4 points.

According to the Water Development Board, at 9 AM on Saturday, the water level of the Gomti River in Comilla was 96 centimeters above the danger level.

The water level of the Khowai River at the Ballah point in Habiganj was 44 centimeters above the danger level, and at the Moulvibazar point, the water level of the Manu River was 91 centimeters above the danger level.

At the Ramgarh station in Chattogram, the water level of the Feni River was 53 centimeters above the danger level.

In the morning, the water level of the Kushiara River at the Amarshid point in Sylhet was 14 centimeters above the danger level, at the Sheola point was 1 centimeter above, and at the Sherpur-Sylhet point was 9 centimeters above the danger level. At the Markuli point in Sunamganj, the water level of this river was 4 centimeters above the danger level.

Due to a communication breakdown with the Parsuram station in Feni, the Water Development Board could not provide information about the Muhuri River there.

According to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, at least 11 districts in the country have been inundated due to heavy rainfall and upstream floods. Approximately 4,69,299 people have been affected in these districts. As of that time, the ministry reported 15 deaths due to the floods.

Heavy rain forecasted in three divisions

In light of the ongoing rainfall and flood situation, the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in three divisions of the country.

According to the regular bulletin from the Meteorological Department, from 9 AM on Saturday, many areas in Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions, as well as some areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, may experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds.

Additionally, moderate to heavy rain is expected in some places in Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions.

Up to 61 millimeters of rain was recorded in Ishwardi, Pabna, over the past 24 hours until 6 AM on Saturday. Other areas that received varying amounts of rain include 42 millimeters in Khepupura, Patuakhali; 41 millimeters in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar; 27 millimeters in Barishal; and 23 millimeters in Bhola.

Generally, rain is categorized as light if it falls between 1 to 10 millimeters in 24 hours, moderate if it falls between 11 to 22 millimeters, moderate to heavy if it falls between 23 to 43 millimeters, heavy if it falls between 44 to 88 millimeters, and very heavy if it exceeds 88 millimeters.
