28 Pakistanis Killed in Bus Accident in Iran


In a tragic bus accident in Yazd, Iran, at least 28 Pakistanis have been killed and another 23 injured. Pakistani Ambassador in Tehran, Muddasir Tipu, reported that the accident occurred late Tuesday night, August 20. The news was reported by Pakistani media outlet Dawn.

On Wednesday, Tipu posted on social media platform X, "28 Pakistanis lost their lives in a bus accident in Yazd city last night while heading to a religious event. Another 23 were injured. I am at a loss for words to express this grief. However, I promise to do everything possible to return the deceased to their home country and to ensure proper medical care for the injured."

He further mentioned that Pakistani officials have departed for Yazd and that he is in ongoing contact with the relevant Iranian authorities.

Iranian news agency Mehr reported that the bus lost control and overturned at the Beshir-Taftan checkpoint in Yazd, which then caught fire.

Ali Malekzadeh, head of Yazd’s crisis management agency, told Mehr that among the deceased, 11 were women and 17 were men. The condition of 14 of the injured is critical.

Earlier, state-run Radio Pakistan had reported that at least 35 Pakistanis had died and another 15 were injured in the accident.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his condolences for the victims and has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to arrange for the prompt return of the deceased and provide adequate support for the injured.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed his condolences and directed Pakistan's mission in Tehran to provide all possible assistance to the affected families.
