The United Nations is committed to supporting the interim government and people of Bangladesh in a successful transition process that strengthens human rights protection. This commitment was stated by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, at the start of the organization's regular briefing on Friday.
Haq mentioned that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, have discussed a wide range of support issues. This includes assisting the interim government in ensuring accountability and various other matters. Haq added that in light of recent violence and instability, a team of experts will visit Dhaka next week to discuss areas and methods of assistance for investigating human rights violations. The High Commissioner is committed to supporting a successful transition process that enhances human rights protection in Bangladesh.
On Wednesday, Dr. Muhammad Yunus's press wing announced that the United Nations would soon begin an investigation into the killings of protesters during the recent student movement in the country. A team of UN experts will be visiting Bangladesh soon for this purpose. The announcement was made by the press wing of the interim government’s Chief Advisor, citing Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. On the same day, Volker Turk spoke by phone with Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Dr. Yunus thanked Volker Turk and long-time friend UN Secretary-General António Guterres for their support of the country’s student movement.
