China Seeks Good Relations with the United States: Xi Jinping

Tensions between China and the United States frequently arise over various issues, and their relationship has often been contentious. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping has now committed to maintaining good relations with the United States. On Thursday, Xi Jinping assured White House top aide Jake Sullivan that despite “great changes,” Beijing is committed to sustaining good relations with the United States.

Sullivan is the first U.S. National Security Advisor to visit China since 2016. During his official visit, he met with President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and other high-ranking officials. This visit comes at a time when China has been entangled in security issues with Japan and the Philippines.

Regarding Sullivan's visit, China's state television CCTV reported that Xi Jinping told Sullivan, “Despite ‘great changes,’ China and the United States can still enjoy good relations. China’s commitment to the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations has not changed. We hope the United States will work with China to meet halfway.”

Following Xi Jinping’s assurance, Sullivan stated that, “President Joe Biden is looking forward to discussions with Xi Jinping next week. President Biden is committed to managing this productive relationship responsibly so that competition does not turn into conflict or confrontation. We are eager to work together where our interests align.”
