Accusations of negligence in official duties have led to the execution of nearly 30 government officials in North Korea under the orders of ruler Kim Jong Un. Reports from several South Korean news outlets have stated that Kim issued this directive in response to alleged negligence. Recently, North Korea experienced severe flooding, landslides, and heavy rains, resulting in thousands of deaths and numerous people being displaced.
The reports further claim that Kim has sentenced several government officials to death for their failure to prevent the damage. A South Korean TV channel reported this information citing a source from North Korea. They noted that Kim’s order was carried out last month, in August, with the government executing 20-30 officials. Due to the extreme secrecy maintained by the North Korean administration, this news had not been made public. The TV channel also mentioned that Kim’s administration had already issued threats of severe punishment last month.
Anandabazar Online has not verified the accuracy of this news. However, a report from North Korea’s Central News Agency (NCCNA) indicates that Kim had decreed “harsh punishment” for officials responsible for the damage caused by the floods in July. NCCNA also reported that Kim had called an emergency Politburo meeting before issuing the order. At that meeting in Sinujiju, Kim’s directive led to the “fate” of nearly 30 government officials being decided.
