Islamabad in Uproar: Ultimatum for Imran Khan’s Release

On Sunday, thousands of supporters of imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), flooded the streets of Islamabad demanding his release. The party has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to free Khan, as reported by Al Jazeera and Geo News.

Following the contentious national and regional elections in February, PTI organized the rally in Islamabad to showcase its strength. Social media platform X was abuzz with videos and photos of Khan's supporters arriving in the capital from across the country. PTI has accused authorities of blocking their supporters' paths.

During the rally, Hamad Azhar, a close ally of Khan, vowed that they would not relent until Khan is released. Prominent Lahore lawyer and PTI leader Salman Akram Raja asserted that Khan is the only person capable of rescuing the country from corrupt and inept politicians.

Supporter Robina Gafoor told Al Jazeera that getting to the rally was extremely difficult due to roadblocks. She affirmed her steadfast support for Khan, saying, "If Imran Khan calls for a protest, we have no choice but to respond. We will stand by him until our last breath."

PTI claims that authorities have suppressed their supporters at the rally. Footage from local Sama News showed riot police using tear gas to disperse the protesters, who then retaliated.

Imran Khan was removed from his position as Prime Minister through a no-confidence vote in April 2022 and has been imprisoned since August 2023.
