Jane's Addiction's concert in Boston was cut short on Friday night after a heated onstage altercation between singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro.
During the performance of “Ocean Size,” Farrell's frustration boiled over for reasons that remain unclear. In footage from the show, Farrell can be seen approaching Navarro and forcefully shoving him. The situation escalated quickly, with Farrell angrily confronting Navarro and eventually landing a punch on his longtime bandmate's shoulder.
Navarro, taken aback, asked, "What the fuck?" as crew members intervened to separate the two. Despite their efforts, Farrell attempted to bypass them and continue his aggression, prompting additional crew members and even bassist Eric Avery to restrain him and escort him offstage. Navarro eventually left as well, resulting in the concert ending after just 11 songs—three to four fewer than usual for this leg of Jane's Addiction's reunion tour.
Variety reports that tension between the band members has been escalating since the start of their first tour together in 14 years. Farrell’s extended interactions with the crowd have reportedly frustrated Navarro, and reviews have noted that Farrell was seen drinking a bottle of red wine onstage.
Earlier issues included problematic performances in New York City, but the confrontation in Boston was the most severe. According to JamBase, the discord began during “Mountain Song” and persisted through “Three Days” before culminating in the “Ocean Size” incident.
Jane’s Addiction has yet to comment on the altercation, and Avery’s Instagram, which frequently updates fans during the tour, has not addressed the situation. Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, took to social media to provide her perspective, describing the escalating tensions and Farrell’s growing frustration with the stage volume and his own vocal issues. She also revealed a backstage altercation where Avery reportedly put Farrell in a headlock and punched him.
“Perry was a crazed beast for the next half hour,” Etty wrote. “He eventually broke down and cried, while Eric either failed to grasp de-escalation or took advantage of the situation to deliver a few cheap shots.”
The Jane’s Addiction reunion tour is set to resume on Sunday night in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with the tour scheduled to conclude on October 16 in Los Angeles. This tour marks the first time in 14 years that the band's original lineup—Farrell, Navarro, Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins—has reunited, following Navarro’s temporary departure due to long Covid.
