At the Toronto Film Festival premiere of Ron Howard’s star-studded survival thriller “Eden,” Jude Law playfully addressed his daring full frontal nude scene. The film, set on a remote Galápagos island, follows European settlers who discover that their paradise is anything but, as the logline suggests: “They believe they’ve found paradise — only to discover that hell is other people.” The story is indeed based on real events.
Law, who portrays Friedrich Ritter, a doctor living in isolation with his wife (Vanessa Kirby) before the arrival of other settlers, joked about the boldness required for his role. When moderator Cameron Bailey noted that Ritter’s role likely demanded more audacity, Law responded with a laugh, “You mean walking around naked?” He continued, “The real challenge for me was not just the nudity but finding movement within his rigidity. Ritter didn’t want to be moved or bent.”
Law credited the ensemble cast, including Ana de Armas, Kirby, Sydney Sweeney, and Daniel Brühl, for making it easier to embrace such uninhibited performances. Each actor faced their own daring scenes: Sweeney’s character has a dramatic birth scene while fending off wild animals, and De Armas’s Baroness engages in a provocative ocean threesome.
Law reflected on the collaborative spirit of the cast, saying, “There was something enticing about being part of an ensemble. We all questioned, ‘How far are we going to go?’ It was a wonderful, fluid game of trust and chance.”
De Armas, who plays a scheming heiress hoping to build a luxurious resort amidst hostile conditions, admitted her fear but also her excitement about the role. She recalled a phone conversation with Howard where she expressed concern that the role might jeopardize her career. During a pivotal scene, audience cheers at the Roy Thomson Hall made De Armas feel personally acknowledged. “By the way,” she joked, “I heard you celebrating… it felt personal.”
Howard, known for directing hits like “A Beautiful Mind” and “The Da Vinci Code,” described “Eden” as a departure from his previous work. He expressed that despite its dark and bizarre elements, the film aligns with his fascination with stories based on real events. “As dark as the story is, it shows that survival of the fittest is connected to love and family. It’s a family story! ‘Parenthood’ to ‘Eden’… don’t you see it?!”
Howard also hinted at the film’s untapped potential, “It could have been even crazier. There were twists and turns we didn’t go down.”
The premiere was briefly interrupted by a medical emergency, but after confirming the affected audience member would be okay, Howard and the rest of the attendees continued with the Q&A session, receiving applause in support of the festival-goer’s recovery.
