The San Francisco 49ers have ruled out star running back Christian McCaffrey for the second consecutive week due to ongoing calf and Achilles issues.
Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that the team is contemplating placing McCaffrey on injured reserve, a move that would sideline him for at least four games. McCaffrey experienced pain after Thursday's practice, leading to the decision. The 49ers will face the Minnesota Vikings on the road this Sunday.
“If McCaffrey goes on IR, it means he’ll be out for a minimum of four games,” said 49ers General Manager John Lynch on KNBR radio. “It’s been frustrating for Christian and for us because he’s an exceptional player. However, our focus is on the long-term.”
The 2023 Offensive Player of the Year, McCaffrey led the league in rushing yards last season with a career-high 1,459, adding 14 touchdowns. He also recorded 564 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns.
“We have to be prudent and keep the long season in mind,” Lynch said. “We need Christian to be fully healthy and don’t want to risk anything.”
The possibility of McCaffrey being placed on IR is a recent development; Shanahan had previously indicated that missing four games was not under consideration.
Can Jordan Mason Fill the Void?
With McCaffrey's absence, the focus shifts to Jordan Mason, who performed admirably in the game against the New York Jets. Mason had a notable game, carrying the ball 28 times, the highest for a 49ers running back in 11 years, and remained injury-free.
However, depth behind Mason is a concern. Deebo Samuel also took 10 carries against the Jets, but it’s uncertain if he can maintain that level of usage throughout the season. The next option is rookie Isaac Guerendo, a fourth-round pick, with Patrick Taylor Jr. also available but yet to see any carries this season.
How Long Can the 49ers Manage Without McCaffrey?
The 49ers are not under pressure to rush McCaffrey back, especially given Mason's strong performance. The team has the depth to manage his absence while he continues his recovery. However, Shanahan’s mention of McCaffrey's “worst day” health-wise being Thursday suggests a cautious approach may be necessary.
