A Miami-Dade police officer has been placed on administrative leave following the detention of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Sunday, just hours before the team’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Online videos show Hill being surrounded by four officers and restrained in handcuffs. One clip depicts Hill on the ground with an officer's knee on his back, while another video shows an officer approaching him swiftly, causing Hill to fall, though the footage is partially obstructed.
According to the team, Hill was pulled over roughly a block from Hard Rock Stadium. He received citations for reckless driving and driving without a license, as reported by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Following the game, Hill tried to frame the incident positively.
“Obviously, every situation has its bad apples, so I want to use this platform to turn this into something positive—both for myself and for Miami-Dade,” Hill said in a postgame interview. “It’s all about making a positive impact on the community.” He also expressed his respect for police officers and shared his aspiration to become one someday.
Hill admitted he is still unclear about the reasons for his handcuffing. “I’m not going to give you a version because I still don’t know what happened,” he said. “But I want to use this platform to ask, ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’” He emphasized that he remained respectful throughout the incident, adhering to his upbringing.
Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels stated on X that the department will review body camera footage of the incident. “I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers,” she said.
Hill mentioned feeling isolated during the incident but appreciated the support of teammates Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith, who arrived to help deescalate the situation. Campbell, a defensive tackle, said he was handcuffed when he attempted to intervene, adding, “I didn’t understand what the issue was, but being handcuffed myself felt wrong. It just shows our resilience; we didn’t let it stop us. We refocused and played a good game.”
The Dolphins ultimately won 20-17 against the Jaguars. Hill contributed with seven catches for 130 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown reception. In a celebratory gesture, Hill mimicked being handcuffed in the end zone.
