New York Jets vs. San Francisco 49ers odds, expert predictions, and viewing guide: Aaron Rodgers returns, but the 49ers are favored for ‘Monday Night Football’

"Monday Night Football" kicks off 2024 with a high-profile matchup as the San Francisco 49ers host the New York Jets. After a Super Bowl loss last season, the 49ers are focused on avoiding a letdown, while the Jets, led by four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, are eager to prove they’re championship contenders. Despite the return of Rodgers, the 49ers are favored to win as they wrap up the Week 1 schedule.

San Francisco boasts a loaded roster, with quarterback Brock Purdy, the NFL’s most efficient passer last season (113 QB rating), returning alongside his top three targets. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who recently signed an extension, joins Deebo Samuel Sr. and tight end George Kittle, forming a formidable trio for opposing defenses.

Reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, who plays behind Purdy, might not be available for the opener due to ongoing calf and Achilles issues. He was limited in practice last week and is listed as questionable.

Defensively, the 49ers were impressive last season, ranking third in points allowed (17.5) and eighth in yards allowed per game (303.9). However, with defensive end Arik Armstead moving to Jacksonville and linebacker Dre Greenlaw sidelined with an Achilles injury, there are some changes. Despite this, Nick Bosa and the rest of the defense still possess enough talent to remain among the league’s elite.

For the Jets, Rodgers' 2023 season was cut short by a ruptured Achilles after just four offensive snaps, and the team’s passers struggled with a league-low 70.5 QB rating in his absence. However, optimism is high with an improved offensive line and emerging stars like wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall, both of whom could have standout seasons if Rodgers returns to his former self.

Even with potential rust from Rodgers, the Jets’ defense is their strong suit. Pro Football Focus ranked them as the top unit in defensive line, linebacker, and secondary categories this offseason.
