Spain's Fabián Ruiz scored twice as his team, despite being down to 10 men, secured a 4-1 victory over Switzerland in the heavy rain in Geneva. This win marked Spain's first in Nations League A Group Four, while Switzerland suffered their second consecutive defeat.
After a goalless draw against Serbia in their opening match, Euro 2024 champions Spain quickly found their rhythm at the Stade de Genève. Joselu and Ruiz put Spain ahead 2-0 within the first 13 minutes.
Spain's progress was momentarily hindered when defender Robin Le Normand received a red card in the 20th minute, allowing Switzerland to pull one back with a goal from Zeki Amdouni before halftime.
Despite Switzerland's efforts to equalize, Spain capitalized on counter-attacks late in the game. Ruiz scored his second goal, and Ferran Torres also found the net to secure a commanding 4-1 win.
Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his pride, saying, "One of my greatest sources of pride is the dedication of this team. Even with 10 men, we managed to control the game superbly. I am immensely proud, and it's clear we're continuing to grow and improve."
Switzerland, who had lost 2-0 to Denmark in their group opener, faced frustration with two disallowed goals and a denied penalty appeal. Spain took the lead early when 17-year-old Lamine Yamal's clever cross was headed in by Joselu.
Becir Omeragic's attempt to equalize was ruled out due to a handball by Remo Freuler in the buildup. Spain extended their lead when Nico Williams' shot was saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but Ruiz scored the rebound.
The red card for Le Normand came after he obstructed Breel Embolo, leading to a direct dismissal by referee Irfan Peljto. Amdouni's free kick hit the crossbar before he scored from close range just before halftime. Switzerland's penalty claim for a handball by Yamal was dismissed, and another Amdouni effort from a corner was ruled out.
Spain sealed their win with Torres setting up Ruiz for a third goal and then scoring himself to add further shine to the victory.
Swiss defender Manuel Akanji commented, "The goals we conceded were too easy. We had communication issues and didn't defend well. Although we did well at 2-0 down, we faltered in the second half, leaving ourselves exposed to counter-attacks. Overall, we didn't do enough."
