White House: 'War is not inevitable'
EM,BEIRUT/JERUSAL Sept 20 (Reuters) - Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander and other key figures in an airstrike on Beirut, intensifying the conflict with the Iran-backed group. Ibrahim Aqil, a leading member of Hezbollah’s elite unit, was among those killed, escalating the year-long clash.
Hezbollah acknowledged Aqil's death, calling him "one of its top leaders" without detailing the circumstances. Lebanon's health ministry reported at least 14 casualties, with rescue efforts continuing.
The Israeli military described Aqil as the acting commander of the Radwan special forces unit. The airstrike hit a Beirut building where Aqil was meeting other commanders, killing around 10 senior figures.
As tensions rise along the Israel-Lebanon border, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to securing its northern region. Tens of thousands of people have evacuated from both sides amid ongoing violence, sparked by Hezbollah's support of Palestinians in Gaza.
While the White House warned Americans against traveling to Lebanon, it emphasized that "war is not inevitable" and diplomatic efforts would continue.
