On Tuesday, Russia launched a missile attack on a military institute in central Ukraine. The attack resulted in at least 51 deaths and 271 injuries.
Russia fired two ballistic missiles targeting a military institute in the city of Poltava in central Ukraine. This is the deadliest attack by Russia in Ukraine so far this year.
Photos from the scene of the attack have been posted on social media. They show many young bodies lying on the ground, covered in dust and debris. In the background, a large building is seen severely damaged. Reuters has not been able to immediately verify the authenticity of the photos.
After the attack on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote in a post on the messaging app Telegram, "The vile Russians responsible for this attack must be held accountable."
Zelensky has ordered a swift investigation into the incident and mentioned that a building at the Military Institute of Communications has been damaged.
Since Russia's invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February 2022, Zelensky has regularly addressed the public. In his speech on Tuesday night, he confirmed that 51 people had been killed in the attack on the military institute in Poltava.
Zelensky stated that more people are still trapped under the rubble of the building. Efforts are being made to rescue them and save lives.
Following the attack, Ukraine's emergency services confirmed the deaths of 50 people. Poltava region Governor Philip Pronin reported that around 15 people might still be trapped under the rubble.
The Ukrainian infantry has stated that all the deceased were military personnel, but they did not specify the number of armed forces members who were affected.
This is a significant blow for Kyiv, as the country is already fighting a more powerful enemy. In the midst of this, they are trying to keep the morale of their soldiers high.
Russia has not immediately commented on the attack.
