Three Israeli police officers have been killed in a gunman attack in the occupied West Bank. The attack occurred on Sunday (September 1) near Hebron when their police vehicle was set on fire. British news agency Reuters reported this information, citing Israeli officials.
The military confirmed the attack at the Idna-Tarkumiya junction area. They also mentioned that security forces are searching for the assailants. Initially, Israel's ambulance service reported that two were killed and the third was severely injured.
Israeli forces have been conducting major operations in the region for several months. Since Wednesday, hundreds of Israeli soldiers have been carrying out operations in the West Bank. Israel stated that the aim of the operation is to root out Islamist militants.
Despite ceasefire discussions, the international community has called for an end to these operations amid the ongoing severe fighting in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that during the Sunday attack, the three police officers were in the vehicle and were killed.
Referring to the six Israelis who were taken hostage and killed in Gaza, Netanyahu said, "We are fighting against a cruel enemy who wants to kill us."
The bodies of the six hostages were recovered from a tunnel on Sunday.
Bezalel Smotrich, a hardline member of Israel's security cabinet and Minister of Finance, has called for further measures against Palestinian armed militants in the West Bank.
Recalling the severe Hamas attack on October 7, he said, "We need to do now what we did not do on that terrible night and initiate a well-planned attack and decisively combat terrorism."
From the scene of the police attack, he stated, "We are committed to eradicating terrorism on all fronts."
