Quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 36-24 road victory over their NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, on Thursday night.
Purdy connected on a 76-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel in the second quarter, followed by 10- and nine-yard scoring throws to George Kittle in the third and fourth quarters. With this win, the third-year quarterback improved to 5-0 against Seattle, including the playoffs.
Kittle's first touchdown extended the 49ers' lead to 23-3, but Seattle quickly responded with a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by Laviska Shenault Jr. Before the third quarter ended, the Seahawks put together a 13-play, 94-yard drive, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Walker III.
However, Seattle couldn’t maintain momentum. They punted on their next possession, and Geno Smith threw a costly interception on their following drive. Cornerback Renardo Green returned the interception to the 15-yard line, and three plays later, Purdy found Kittle again, pushing the 49ers' lead to 29-17.
Smith later led Seattle on a 15-play, 70-yard drive, ending with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett, cutting the deficit to 29-24. With just under two minutes remaining and all three timeouts, Seattle's hopes were alive. But backup running back Isaac Guerendo, filling in for an injured Jordan Mason, broke free for a 76-yard run to the Seahawks' five-yard line.
Two plays later, fullback Kyle Juszczyk punched in a touchdown, sealing the win for San Francisco.
The victory was crucial for the 49ers, who had struggled early in the season with a 2-3 start and a recent 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals after surrendering a 10-point fourth-quarter lead. Additionally, they were 0-2 in NFC West play, following a Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
With Purdy's strong performance, the 49ers got back on track, and he earned well-deserved praise for his efforts.
