Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, who has long supported the Republican Party, has announced that he will vote for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris rather than his party’s nominee, Donald Trump, in the upcoming election. Cheney made this announcement himself.
Cheney, who was a highly influential figure during former President George W. Bush's administration, stated in a statement that "no one has ever posed a greater threat to our country than the current Republican candidate, Donald Trump." The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November, featuring Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Cheney’s statement condemned Trump for attempting to stay in power through lies and violence after being rejected by voters in the last election. He emphasized that Trump can no longer be trusted with power.
As a citizen, Cheney said it is each person's duty to place the country above party politics to protect the Constitution. Therefore, he will cast his vote for the current Vice President Kamala Harris.
Kamala Harris's campaign has welcomed Cheney's endorsement. Her campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, expressed pride in receiving Cheney’s support and deeply honored his courage to prioritize the country over party.
Previously, Cheney’s daughter and former Republican legislator Liz Cheney had also publicly endorsed Kamala Harris. Liz Cheney was a member of the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot and was one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach former President Trump. In 2022, she lost her congressional seat to a Trump-supported candidate.
Meanwhile, Trump has downplayed the significance of Cheney's decision to vote for Harris. In a social media post, he referred to the former Vice President as an "irrelevant RINO" (Republican In Name Only). Trump also described Cheney as "the king of endless, unjustified wars," referring to his role in the Iraq War.
