Saudi Arabia Introduces Major Changes to Labor Law

Saudi Arabia has made significant revisions to its labor law. Under the new law, workers will receive more benefits at their workplaces compared to before. The revised law is set to take effect in February of the coming year.

This information has been reported by Gulf News.

According to the report, a decree has already been issued in the country. This decree includes changes to several articles and introduces two new articles, while removing seven existing articles.

Under the new labor law, maternity leave has been increased from 10 weeks (2.5 months) to 12 weeks (3 months). Leave for attending the death of a sibling has been increased to three days. Additionally, the probation period in any organization will be 180 days.

Moreover, employees will now be able to claim both financial compensation and time off for overtime work. When resigning, employees must notify their workplace at least one month in advance, compared to the previous requirement of two months. Employers will also be required to cover housing and transportation expenses for employees.

The report further states that there have also been amendments regarding foreign workers. Employers or institutions must provide special contracts for foreign employees. However, the current law does not specify a time frame for this. The contract’s terms will be determined based on the validity of the work permit.
