The future story of Daisy Ridley’s character Rey is facing a delay, as screenwriter Steven Knight has exited the upcoming Star Wars project, Deadline has confirmed. According to sources, Lucasfilm is actively searching for a new writer to develop the next chapter in Rey’s journey, which picks up after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.
Despite the setback, filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) remains attached as the project’s director. Ridley, who spoke to Deadline at SXSW, mentioned she had only limited details about the storyline but hinted that the plot would center around Rey, the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, as she begins a new Jedi Academy.
The production delay is not expected to affect the two upcoming Star Wars release dates, currently scheduled for December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027. This latest screenwriter search follows previous changes, as Knight had replaced Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson earlier in the project. Known for his work on Peaky Blinders and the Angelina Jolie film Maria, Knight’s recent exit signals Lucasfilm’s ongoing commitment to fine-tuning the story before filming begins.
In other Star Wars news, Jon Favreau’s film The Mandalorian and Grogu is next up in the franchise’s cinematic lineup. Co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni, the movie stars Sigourney Weaver and Pedro Pascal. A teaser shown at D23 featured appearances from fan-favorite characters like Babu Frick, AT-ATs reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back, and Zeb from Star Wars: Rebels.
