Tennis Legend Rafael Nadal Announces Retirement After Davis Cup Finals .

PARIS — Spanish tennis icon Rafael Nadal, one of the most successful players in the sport's history with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, has announced his retirement, effective after this year's Davis Cup Finals.

In a video message, the 38-year-old Nadal reflected on the challenges of recent years. "These last two years have been particularly difficult," he said. "I’m excited to finish my career at the Davis Cup, representing my country. It feels like I’m closing the circle, as one of my earliest triumphs was the 2004 final in Sevilla."

The Davis Cup Finals will take place from November 19-24.

Nadal, who won a record 14 French Open titles and was dubbed the 'King of Clay,' struggled with injuries in recent years. He missed the 2023 French Open and was knocked out in the first round by Germany’s Alexander Zverev in 2024. His last Roland Garros victory came in 2022, capping an incredible 112-4 record at the tournament.

Over the past two seasons, Nadal competed in only 23 matches. His retirement comes two years after his longtime rival, Roger Federer, hung up his racket, leaving Novak Djokovic as the sole active member of tennis' 'Big Three.'

French player Richard Gasquet, another contemporary of Nadal's, also announced earlier that he will retire after the 2025 French Open.

Nadal took a moment to thank his family and his team, giving special recognition to his uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, for his guidance throughout his career. "Thanks to him, I’ve overcome many challenges in my career," Nadal said.

Addressing his fans, Nadal expressed deep gratitude: "I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve made me feel. Everything I’ve experienced has been a dream come true." He added, "I leave with the peace of knowing I gave my best."

Despite declining any special farewell after his French Open exit this year, Nadal is expected to receive an emotional tribute at Roland Garros in 2025.
