Starfield players have been eagerly awaiting the game’s first major expansion, *Shattered Space*, after its initial launch last summer. While the game has seen updates over the past year, this expansion comes with high expectations—and it delivers a decent experience, though ultimately underwhelming. After an intriguing setup, *Shattered Space* ends up feeling like more of the same.
The story begins with a distress call, leading you to a ghost-filled derelict space station and then to the home planet of the House Va’ruun, a religious sect that worships a giant serpent. There, you uncover a calamity plaguing the Va’ruun, with members disappearing, transforming into wraiths, and causing other strange events. After a ceremony that converts you to the church, you take on the task of solving the mystery and restoring order.
Despite the promising premise, the gameplay largely follows the usual Bethesda formula—exploring dungeons, fetching items, and fighting enemies. The planet’s strange red and purple landscapes, gravity-defying bubbles, and bizarre creatures hint at cosmic horror but ultimately feel like another familiar backdrop. Sidequests offer interesting narratives, but the core experience remains predictable.
Though *Shattered Space* is visually and narratively appealing, it falls short of being the bold, weird expansion fans were hoping for, leaving players wanting something more groundbreaking.
