The upcoming film, reported by *Variety*, has been in development since 2022. It will be directed by Adele Lim, known for writing *Crazy Rich Asians*. The project will serve as a prequel and the third installment in the series, following the success of *The Princess Diaries* (2001) and *The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement* (2004).
