Anne Hathaway is officially returning for *Princess Diaries 3*! The actress confirmed the exciting news on Instagram shortly after Deadline reported that director Adele Lim had signed on for the highly anticipated sequel.
In a playful video, Hathaway counts to three while showing clips of her younger self as Mia Thermopolis alongside Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, both exclaiming, "Shut up!" — a nod to their iconic lines from the original films.

Lim, best known for her work on Disney’s *Raya and the Last Dragon* (2021) and her directorial debut *Joy Ride* (2023), is set to helm the third *Princess Diaries* film. Lim’s impressive resume includes credits as a writer-producer for *One Tree Hill* and *Lethal Weapon*, as well as her work on the hit rom-com *Crazy Rich Asians*.
Hathaway’s recent projects include starring in *The Idea of You* (2024) for Prime Video, where she plays Solène Marchand, alongside Nicholas Galitzine. She also appeared in *Mother’s Instinct* (2024), *She Came to Me* (2023), and *Eileen* (2023). On top of her return to Genovia, Hathaway is set to reprise her role in the upcoming sequel to *The Devil Wears Prada* (2006), with a script penned by Aline Brosh McKenna.

Debra Martin Chase will produce *Princess Diaries 3*, with Lim’s producing partner Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack as executive producers. Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.
The original *Princess Diaries* debuted in 2001 and was a breakthrough role for Hathaway, who played Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers she's royalty. Its sequel, *The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement*, was released in 2004, just after Hathaway starred in *Ella Enchanted*.
As for the rest of the original cast, no official confirmations have been made. While Julie Andrews has expressed uncertainty about her involvement, fans are eager to see how the beloved characters will return in this new chapter. Garry Marshall directed the first two films, with scripts written by Meg Cabot, Gina Wendkos, and Shonda Rhimes.
