Donald Trump has announced that Elon Musk, alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, will spearhead a newly proposed "Department of Government Efficiency," cheekily abbreviated as DOGE — a nod to the popular cryptocurrency.
Musk and Ramaswamy's mission will be to streamline the federal government by dismantling bureaucratic red tape, cutting excessive regulations, and eliminating wasteful spending, according to the president-elect.

Throughout his campaign, Trump hinted at enlisting Musk for this role, promising a significant reduction in government size and scope. He proposed abolishing the Department of Education and downsizing agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Heritage Foundation’s strategy for the new administration also advocates for the disbanding of agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which includes the National Weather Service.
Elon Musk expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, "This will send shockwaves through the system, targeting the rampant waste in government — and there’s a lot of it!"
Trump likened the initiative to a modern-day “Manhattan Project,” highlighting its transformative potential.
It’s unclear whether this Department of Government Efficiency will be formally established as a Cabinet-level agency or if Musk and Ramaswamy will operate as special appointees bypassing Senate confirmation. Historically, presidents have formed commissions and task forces led by private sector figures for similar reform efforts.
Trump emphasized the urgency of their mission, stating, “I am confident Elon and Vivek will overhaul the Federal Bureaucracy with a focus on efficiency, improving the lives of all Americans. We must eliminate the rampant waste and fraud that plague our $6.5 trillion in annual government spending.”
The target for completing this overhaul is set for July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American Independence.
Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, publicly endorsed Trump in July and played an active role during the transition period. He reportedly joined a recent call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Vivek Ramaswamy, who competed in the Republican primary last year, later aligned himself with Trump as a prominent campaign surrogate.
